Public Health Emergency Communications Toolkit

This toolkit provides editable Public Health Emergency Communication Resources for the PHEP Coalitions within Region 3. It includes standardized messaging designed to help public health leadership and local health departments rapidly communicate accurate, timely, and consistent information to residents during public health emergencies.

The toolkit contains communication materials for 15 common public health emergencies, available in 10 languages. To support a variety of communication methods, each topic is provided in multiple customizable formats, including:

  • Flyer/Website Format text for posting on local health department or municipal websites or printing
  • Social media Format for platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and X
  • Customizable templates that allow communities to add municipal seals, department names, contact information, phone numbers, and website links

How to Customize These Public Health Templates in Canva

These templates were created so that local public health departments can quickly customize materials with their own town or city information before sharing with the public.

Step 1: Download the PDF

  •  Click the download link for the document you want to use.
  •  Save the PDF file to your computer. 

Step 2: Open Canva

  • Go to Canva https://www.canva.com/
  • Log in to your Canva account.
  • If you do not already have an account, you can create a free account.

Step 3: Upload the PDF into Canva

  • From the Canva homepage, click Create a Design.
  • Select Import File.
  • Choose the PDF you downloaded from your computer.
  • Canva will automatically convert the PDF into an editable design.

Step 4: Edit the Template

  • Click on the text boxes you want to change.
  • Replace the placeholder information with your local information, including: town or city name, town or city seal/logo, local health department phone number, website or email address (if applicable)
  • Review the document carefully to ensure all information is accurate.

Step 5: Download the Final Version

  • When editing is complete, click Share in the top right corner.
  • Select Download.
  • Choose your preferred file type: PDF Print for high-quality printing, NG or JPG for social media or websites
  • Click Download to save the finalized document.

Step 6: Share with the Public

  • Print copies for distribution
  • Post the document on your website
  • Share on social media
  • Email residents and community partners
